How to Prepare Your Home for a Flooring Installation: The Complete Checklist

The difference between a smooth flooring installation and a stressful disaster often comes down to preparation. After 15 years, I can walk into a home and immediately know if the project will go smoothly. Proper preparation saves you money (we work faster), prevents unexpected costs (surprises slow us down), and reduces stress. Here's exactly what you need to do before your installer arrives.

1

One Week Before: Major Preparation

Critical tasks to complete a week ahead:

  • Clear room completely: EVERYTHING out - furniture, rugs, decor, outlet covers
  • Why: We need complete access - "mostly clear" adds 1-2 hours labor costs
  • Move furniture: To another room, not center - we need that space
  • Storage tip: Rent pod if doing multiple rooms - shuffling furniture creates chaos
  • Pet and child arrangements: Tools, noise, dust, open doors - safety issue
  • Real talk: Projects delayed by curious dogs in wet adhesive or "helpful" toddlers
  • Notify household: Noise starts early, areas off-limits, bathroom access limited
  • Make solid arrangements, not hopeful plans
2

2-3 Days Before: Detail Work

Essential preparation details:

  • Remove baseboards (if agreed): Do 2-3 days before, not rushing
  • Pro trick: Number back of each baseboard with location
  • Clean subfloor thoroughly: Sweep, vacuum, mop - dust interferes with adhesives
  • Cost: $0 task vs. $100-$150 fee if I clean
  • Check for problems: Walk every inch, feel for soft spots, listen for squeaks
  • Why: Surprises on installation day add cost and time
  • Clear paths: Access to door/garage, power outlets, path to work area, space outside for cuts
  • Protect home: Cardboard runners from entry to work area, cover adjacent furniture
3

Day Before: Final Preparations

Last-minute critical steps:

  • Acclimate materials: 48-72 hours minimum in installation room
  • How: Stack boxes, open a few, let adjust to temperature/humidity
  • Why: Prevents expansion/contraction problems later
  • HVAC: Sometimes needs off for adhesive curing - I'll tell you if needed
  • Secure valuables: Move anything valuable away from work areas
  • Plan for disruption: No room access 1-3 days, noise 8 AM-5 PM, dust despite containment
  • Stock supplies: Cleaning supplies, trash bags, refreshments handy
  • Installers work better: When they can grab water without asking
4

Installation Day: Your Role

How to help the process:

  • Be available but not present: Reachable by phone, but give us space
  • Decisions that might come up: Subfloor issues, layout adjustments, transitions, baseboards
  • Keep pets/kids away: Seriously - safety and productivity issue
  • No other contractors: Multiple trades in one space = chaos
  • Inspect at day's end: Quick walk-through, address concerns immediately
  • Provide feedback: Small concerns easy to address, later discoveries harder
  • Document progress: Photos each day helps with future warranty questions
  • Communication: Good installers want you happy, address reasonable concerns
5

After Installation: Critical 24-48 Hours

Follow these rules to protect your investment:

  • Follow curing instructions: LVP ready immediately, glue-down 24-48 hours, hardwood 3-5 days
  • Violation: Risk permanent damage, void warranties
  • Clean properly: Use recommended products only - wrong cleaners damage floors
  • Reinstall baseboards carefully: Sloppy work ruins beautiful floor
  • Move furniture carefully: Furniture pads, not dragging - don't scratch new floors
  • Inspect thoroughly: Check every transition, cut, corner
  • Address concerns immediately: Within 24-48 hours - waiting weeks makes warranty claims difficult
  • Professional installers: Stand behind their work
6

Common Preparation Mistakes and Costs

What poor preparation costs you:

  • Not clearing rooms completely: +$150-$300 (1-2 hours labor)
  • Skipping subfloor cleaning: +$100-$150
  • Not acclimating materials: Potential installation failure
  • No pet arrangements: Project delays
  • Skipping subfloor inspection: Surprise costs
  • Poor access paths: Damaged walls, slower work
  • Unprepared for decisions: Work stoppages
  • Prepared homeowner: On schedule, no surprise costs, efficient work, beautiful results
  • Unprepared homeowner: Delays, frustration, added costs, rushed decisions, stress
